Three tests to tell me whether or not a horse is ready for me to climb on and ride. If they pass these three tests, at least I know the horse is in a good place mentally and physically for me to get on and walk forward.
One of the first things I learned that makes a big difference in communication with the horse is how to use my hands on the reins effectively. No intimidation. Just communication.
Great feet make good hands. Learn to use three distinct leg positions. Learn to use spurs without intimidation for clear communication with your horse. Spurs should give a more specific signal. I have never had a horse resent a spur used in this manner.
